According to this article, “A professional association representing Internal Revenue Service investigators intends to promote a plan to spin off the Criminal Investigation Division as part of a study aimed at reshaping the agency. The IRS overhaul (PL 116-25) requires the agency to submit a study to Congress in 2020 on ways to restructure operations, including a look at whether CI should report directly to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. The division now reports to the Deputy Commissioner of Services and Enforcement, one of Rettig’s two deputy commissioners.”
Rich Sapinski, Vice-Chair of the Sills Cummis & Gross Tax Litigation Practice Group, “said there’s been a concern that IRS investigators had been detailed to drug investigations in past years and had gotten away from a ‘proper mix.’ Moving the division outside the IRS could risk that happening again, the former IRS attorney said.”
