As seen in this Law360 article, “The New Jersey Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended an attorney who borrowed nearly $90,000 from an ‘elderly, unsophisticated client’ using an unsecured loan agreement for one year, enhancing his punishment from a recommended three months ‘to protect the public and guard against elder abuse by lawyers.’
In an email to Law360 Thursday, former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Peter G. Verniero called the court’s decision ‘one of the most notable disciplinary opinions filed in a long time,’ noting the court’s imposition of a punishment that exceeded panel recommendation and the message being delivered to lawyers throughout the state.”
